Birth of Sri Aurobindo Karmi Sangha, Habra
Initially, the Sangha had to move from one place to another in the rented houses for about 10 years. There was no permanent place to run the Sangha. The members felt to have its own place in order to give a settled life to this Sangha.
The then President of the Sangha late Hemlal Mitra, (1960), being senior to all members at that time was searching for a piece of land at Prafullanagar, near to his home. Hemlal Mitra proceeded ahead. He took a lead to build the Sangha Bhavan with the help of all the members. The efforts were initially felt impossible, but with consistent move and with a small amount of loan, work of construction of the ground floor of the Sangha Bhavan now called Matrimandir, was completed in the mid of 1964 but with out registration of the land.
The Photograph of the Sangha Bhaban was carried by Hemlal Mitra to the Ashram during Darshan of August, 1964. The Mother had graciously put Her signature on that Photograph with “Blessings” and fixed the date 3rd November, 1964 to inaugurate the Sangha Bhavan by late Anil Kumar Mukherjee of Ashram.
However, the Sangha Bhavan was finally inaugurated on 4th November, 1964 instead of 3rd November. But the deed of the land was registered only on 15th June, 1970, after about six years of inauguration.
On 10th November, 1975 the Trust Board of Sri Aurobindo Karmi Sangha was formed on the advice and guidance of late Nalinikanto Gupta, Secretary, Sri Aurobindo Ashram. Before the formation of Trust Board the Sangha, was maintained by a Committee of which Hemlal Mitra was the first President and he continued to remain the president until The Trust Board was approved and formed.
The first Managing Trustee was late Narayan Chandra Pal. On his death in 1990, late Ashit Ranjan Das became the Second Managing Trustee. Following resignation of late Ashit Ranjan Das, Sri Gobindalal Chakraborty had to take the charge of Managing Trustee since March 2003.

The 1st floor of the Matrimandir was completed in the year 1987, again, with the help of contribution, donation from amongst the members, and collection from the Habra bazar with the initiative of Sri Gobindalal Chakraborty, late N. C. Pal and late N. C. Majumdar etc. The work was done under the tireless supervision of late Sushil Kumar Das .
This Sangha, since its inception, was deeply connected with the Mother, through late Nalinikanto Gupta the then Secretary of the Ashram. It was continued all along. For example, one most important letter from late P. Counouma, the then Managing Trustee of the Ashram is attached here –
This Sangha, since its inception, was deeply connected with the Mother. This connectivity or relation was maintained through the then Ashram’s Secretary Nalinikanto Gupta which was continued all along till his last breath. A copy of the following letter will testify above facts.
Membership Form of Sri Aurobindo Karmi Sangha was duly approved and signed with blessings by The Mother in 1956.
